A specialty within obstetrics
What is maternal-fetal medicine?
A maternal-fetal medicine physician is an OB/GYN with additional specialty training in high-risk pregnancy.
MFM specialists help when a mother’s health, a pregnancy complication, prenatal testing, or a concern about the baby calls for deeper expertise. The goal is to translate complex information into a clearer, more useful plan.

Your midwife or OB remains your provider.
We add another layer of expertise.
Arcadia Perinatal works alongside your existing midwife, OB/GYN, or maternal-fetal medicine team—not in place of them. A consultation can help you interpret records, understand risk, consider management strategies, and prepare for conversations with the clinicians providing your local pregnancy care.
- Keep your established midwife, OB/GYN, or MFM team
- Share recommendations with your providers when appropriate
- Use one focused visit or continue with specialist support

Common questions
Before your consultation
Clear expectations are part of good care. Here are answers to questions patients often ask.
01What is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist?+
A maternal-fetal medicine physician—sometimes called an MFM or perinatologist—is an OB/GYN with additional specialty training in high-risk and complicated pregnancy.
02Will Arcadia Perinatal replace my OB/GYN?+
No. Arcadia Perinatal is designed to add specialist expertise while you continue routine and in-person care with your local obstetric team.
03Can you review my ultrasound or prenatal screening?+
A consultation can review available ultrasound reports, images when available, NIPT and other prenatal testing. We do not perform an ultrasound through a virtual visit, and some findings require local imaging or examination.
04What can a virtual MFM consultation do?+
Many valuable parts of specialist care—including history review, interpretation of reports and test results, risk counseling, and planning—can happen effectively by video. If you need an examination, ultrasound, monitoring, laboratory testing, or hospital evaluation, we will help clarify what local care may be appropriate.
05What records should I send?+
Helpful records may include ultrasound reports, prenatal screening, laboratory results, medication lists, prior consultation notes, hospital records, and relevant pregnancy history.
06Do you accept insurance?+
Arcadia Perinatal is a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. We work with Reimbursify to help patients submit consultation documentation—including the superbill—and out-of-network claim information to their insurance plan. Reimbursement depends on your individual benefits and is not guaranteed.
07What if I need urgent or emergency care?+
Virtual consultation is not emergency care. For urgent symptoms, contact your treating physician or labor and delivery unit, go to the nearest emergency department, or call emergency services.
